HIGH ROTATION: AMANDA’S JANUARY FAVOURITES

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo: Using it day and night to help abolish bumps, gently.

Kate Somerville Exfolikate: This is growing on me. At first I was a bit nervous about using a scrub, but it really, really works.

Ren Clarifying Clay Cleanser: Gentle, non-stripping. I use this when I feel a breakout coming on, and even leave it to work for about 2 minutes before rinsing off. It also has a nice, slightly sweet almond-y smell that is unexpected for a clay cleanser.

Eminence Probiotic Mask + Willow Bark Serum: You already know this is my favourite for helping fight breakouts.

Verso Products: Loving the retinol-infused products so far, and their minimalist design.

Kate Somerville Goat Cream: This is a really great replenishing moisturizer, I’m impressed with it so far. Hoping the lactic acid in the goat milk will help to keep breakouts at bay!

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine: Loving this in the shade Boy. Nude, yet gives some oomph to lips. Shiny without being sticky. It’s almost the same as my favourite lipstick, Mademoiselle, but is more sheer and foolproof (I can easily apply this in a flash without a mirror).

Nuxe Reve de Miel:¬†Has been saving my lips from the polar vortex. Thick and protective and last forever. Unfortunately, it was just dropped on the floor last night and the lid cracked ūüė¶

Alpha H Liquid Gold: Resurfaces the skin overnight. I use it alone a few nights a week. Review to come!

IPL: I’ve gotten two facials with the IPL laser, which has really helped to get down to the bottom of my breakouts and dry them out. These treatments have really made a difference (bonus: they stimulate collagen growth).

Makeup

CHANEL HOLIDAY COLLECTION
Joues Contraste in Accent
Le Vernis in Rouge Rubis

Accent is the perfect blush for winter–pink with bronze to warm up paler skin tones

CLARINS
Be Long Mascara

“The main reason why I love this mascara so is the incredible brush (which I learned is really what differentiates a mascara from the pack). It has a small plastic brush so you can really get in there,¬†and it grabs on to each lash with a bit of tension, so you get that long, defined lash, never any clumps. “¬†

VICHY
Dermablend Setting Powder

I apply it before doing my eye makeup in the morning so that¬†the two minutes of waiting time goes by without noticing it. The result is a more even and matte complexion that lasts for hours.”

LANCOME
Effacernes Concealer

It has the perfect amount of thickness and pigment for coverage but never ever clumps or gets stuck in fine lines. It just. doesn’t. budge. Just smooth it on and never worry about your makeup moving around again.”

DIOR
Airflash Foundation

The be-all and end-all of foundations. It has the ever-so-slightest pearlescent sheen to it that gives you a magic glow and watch as it erases all unevenness and blemishes.”

URBAN DECAY
Naked Palette

I shouldn’t have been so blas√©, this palette is actually amazing. Every single colour I have tried looks great. Every. Single. One. And! They are super long-lasting. The colour stays true all day long,¬†without¬†a primer “

Skincare

KIEHL’S
Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Masque

I woke up with a more younger-looking, plumped up face. The skin around my eyes looked so much better–the lines had faded, and the skin was smooth. My skin had a more even and luminous tone. “

SK-II
Masks

If you have the money, these are really a great investment for your face, they will make a noticeable difference in your skin. “

BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE

NUXE
Reve de Miel Lip Balm

“The consistency is quite thick, but not sticky at all,¬†and you barely need any of the honey and grapefruit-scented formula¬†to save your lips from that tight, dry feeling.”

It decongests the pores and works well to help fade post-acne scarring, blackheads, blemishes and sun-damaged skin.”

AURELIA PROBIOTIC SKINCARE
Miracle Cleanser

“The aromatic¬†cleanser¬†throughly cleanses the skin, but leaves it feeling soft and supple. For an extra hydrating/anti-aging kick, a few drops of the¬†Cell Repair Night Oil¬†boosts your skin’s ability to repair your skin overnight.”

Hair

KERASTASE
Mousse Nutri-Sculpt

“It creates such a smooth, voluminous blow dry, without weighing hair down. Seriously–your hair looks like it came from a shampoo commercial.”¬†

MATRIX
Heat Resist

Overall, this line holds my blowout longer (3 days!), fights frizz and most importantly to me, doesn’t feel like I have any product in my hair. Winners all around, and at a great price.”

Body

KIEHL’S
Nashi Blossom and Pink Grapefruit Body Lotion
On my wedding day, I was told by 4 different people that I smelled amazing (before dancing started, mind you), all because of this product.”

WANT // WINTER ESSENTIALS

Unfortunately, Winter is here. Whether we like it or not. I got the basket of mittens, gloves, scarves and hands brought down from the top shelf of the front closet last week to find something to keep me warm on my walk to work. The blustery, cold winds had finally gotten to me and I realized that I could no longer let my fingers freeze every morning.

So I guess it’s time to accept it. Halloween is almost here, which means it is that close to November. Time to beef up our supplies with cozy knits and richer products. Here’s my winter essentials list:

1. Miu Miu Leather Gloves: I believe these were on my wishlist last year. I am just dying for a pair of pink leather gloves like these for fancy occasions. Sometimes looking chic takes precedence over keeping warm.

2. Talula Fulton Mittens: These are my staple mitten. I have picked them up for the last 3 or 4 years now without fail as they perfectly fit my small hands (nothing worse than huge, droopy mittens). Knit exterior and fleece-lined interior to keep your mitts (pun intended) warm.

3. Diptyque Pomander Candle: On my last trip to Soap and Water for my Fall candle (Feu de Bois), I smelled this candle while perusing. It has the perfect mix of everything Christmas–orange, cloves and cinammon, I would have picked it up then, but I am waiting until mid-November so I don’t use it up before December even arrives.

4. Aveda Hand Relief: My favourite hand cream. Non-greasy but rich enough to keep hands from cracking or getting chapped. Plus, the refreshing rosemary-mint scent is always a winner.

5. Elizabeth Arden 8-hour Cream: As you know, I get Peri-Orbital eczema in the Winter (aka dry, itchy, red eyelids). I put this cream on my eyelids to protect them from wind burn on my walks to work. Also great for anything chapped (hands, lips, cheeks, etc.)

6. Nuxe R√™ve de Miel Lip Balm: Thick and luxurious. Won’t wear off for hours and provides a nice barrier for lip protection.

7. Hunter Boots: I don’t feel super chic in these, I kind of feel like I belong on the farm, but Winter just got to me last year, and my feet couldn’t take any more leather-soaked boots any longer. These babies should keep any kind of snow, slush or moisture out. I’ll pair them with thick socks for warmth.

8. Zara Two-Sided Soft Scarf: I’m not sure if it’s the grunge trend that’s happening right now, or if my lumberjack-esque husband’s style is influencing mine, but I saw this scarf online and decided I had to have it. One side for play, one for business. Or, one for grunge, one for prep. Perfectly versatile and large enough to double as a blanket.

9. Roots Cabin Socks: As I mentioned in 7, these are great paired with boots, or just for keeping warm inside. Cozy, thick and they look cute peeking out of boots.

10. Fleece-lined tights: My friend Joanna texted me insisting that if I was making a Winter essentials post, these better be included. And she’s right. Ever since discovering these at Primark, we buy these every year. Straight up tights won’t do when it’s -10, or -20 outside. These allow you to keep wearing your dresses and not totally freeze your butt off.¬†

11. Oliver Peoples XXV-S Sunglasses: I tried these on last summer at Holt Renfrew and I still want them. Plus, everyone needs a pair of sunnies to protect their eyes from snow glare in the winter (and for me, it’s extra eyelid protection against the wind).

12. Green Juice: I am a new convert to this. Every single time I have felt sick, I run to my nearest Fresh Restaurant and pick up their Super Cleanse juice. Filled with vitamins, it has fought off every cold before it has even begun. Plus, it’s always good for your skin too.

13. Aritzia Mirte Turtleneck: I have been dreaming of this sweater since it came out this Fall. I am now waiting patiently for it to go on sale. Who doesn’t love a chunky knit sweater in the winter, plus the 90’s are back now, so turtlenecks are acceptable again.¬†

IN MY BAG // FALL LIP PRODUCTS EDITION

This is ridiculous. New bag (old faithful is getting repaired), new lip products, new post. No fewer than 7 lip products this season. A girl’s gotta have options! And for all of those who think I’m too vain for having 7 lip options, well, haters gonna hate.
RMS LipShine in Sacred: Even though it is now Fall (how is it so cold already?), I still love this hot pink. Buildable colour and shine, and fades to a pretty stain. Instant glamour and a pop of colour for when Fall makes your face look sad and pale.
Fresh Sugar Lip Balm in Rosé: A super-hydrating, pretty pink. This balm has been a mainstay since Sephora offered it as the VIB birthday gift two years ago. I somehow managed to snap up a second birthday gift from that year and have not yet to purchase one of these balms yet. When the day comes that I run out of tube #2, I will finally go to Sephora and actually purchase one in full-size.
Nuxe Rêve de Miel: So hydrating, with the most luxurious texture and prettiest most delicious smell. Definitely my best impulse grab from France.
Av√®ne Cold Cream Lip Balm: Great for when you’re all business and just need a quick swipe of balm. Hydrating and gives you a slight 90’s frosted lip (like Angela Chase). What’s not to love?
Elizabeth Arden 8-hour Cream: This cure-all has stayed in my bag since last winter, when I got eczema on my eyelids. I apply to protect my lids from the cold winds, to my cuticles, to my lips, or mixed into some hand cream.
Rodial Glam Balm Multi: Similar to 8-hour, this magic all-in-one has so many different uses, from lips, to face, to body.
Lipstick Queen Lipstick in Medieval: The newest addition to my purse collection. It’s quick and easy (it’s a balm and lipstick in one) and¬†the perfect subtle red– a great colour to have in my purse for Fall.
Also in my bag: Eye drops, Matte FX and Stila Retractable Powder Brush, Snagless Hair Tie.

NUXE // HUILE PRODIGIEUSE

This “all-purpose” oil is a cult favourite, and was also one of my pharmacy grabs in Paris. I mean, when I saw the amazing price, how could I not pick it up?? Normally this oil is $50 in Canada, and I picked it up for 13 euro. That’s a steal if I ever saw one.

To be honest, once I was at home and looking at it, I wasn’t really totally sure what to do with it at. The bottle came with no instructions. I thought to myself, should I put it on my face? No, I don’t want to accidentally aggravate my chin pimples right now (though you can use it on your face). Should I put it in my hair? That could work. Should I use it instead of body lotion? Well, I am about to jump in the shower, so, why not!

After patting dry after showering, I sprayed this oil on (the spray nozzle is very handy), and was amazed by the texture. Huile Prodigieuse is classified as a dry oil, and it might sound like a weird concept, but once you spray this super-lightweight oil on, it has a dry touch to it. It is very hydrating, but not thick or greasy. It doesn’t feel like you’re covering yourself in Crisco. Just a luxurious almond-scented oil.

I’ve also sprayed this on my ends for a hydrating hair treatment. If your hair is suffering from second-day smell, this will refresh it and make you smell amazing. You can also use it as an after-sun treatment to restore moisture to the skin and hair.

I was told that I smelled like an angel after using this product. Can’t really sell it any better than that.

NUXE // REVE DE MIEL LIP BALM

On my frantic run through the pharmacie on Rue du Four in Paris, I instinctively grabbed a pot of Nuxe’s R√™ve de Miel Lip Balm¬†(and I’m so glad I did). I had heard so much about it, and needed a good lip balm without any colour or sparkles that had good lasting power and intense hydration. I just cannot handle it when I forget to bring a lip balm with me wherever I am going–as soon as I notice I don’t have one, my lips instantly feel dry and it’s all I think about until I can get some balm on.

The consistency is quite thick, but not sticky at all, and you barely need any of the honey and grapefruit-scented formula to save your lips from that tight, dry feeling. The weight of the little pot also makes it feel luxurious when you pull it out of your purse for application.

P.S. I thought it was quite comical that on the box it says “Tested in extremely cold conditions in Canada”.
