A few weeks ago, you might have remembered seeing a mention of the new ‘Misia’ fragrance in one of my news posts. Well, I’ve got my hands on it it now!
I’m sure you are all familiar with Chanel’s iconic scents such as Allure, Coco Mademoiselle and Bleu, but you may not know about their more private collection, Les Exclusifs de Chanel (you may remember me mentioning it in a fragrance post last year). Misia, inspired by Coco Chanel’s best friend, is the newest addition to this range.
Misia was known for her lively and passionate personality and her affinity for the arts and culture. It is said that when herself and Coco met, their energy and forces collided, helping each other to grow. They became the best of friends upon their first meeting, and Misia recognized the genius within Chanel.
When Gabrielle’s lover Arthur Capel passed away in December 1919, Misia and her husband took her away to Venice to overcome her sorrow and find inspiration once again in the museums, churches, and shops.
It was actually Misia herself who planted the seed of launching a Chanel fragrance, joking that she should create an ‘Eau Chanel’. Two years later, No5 was released.
Olivier Polge, the nose behind Misia, says that he was inspired to create a fragrance not based on the person of Misia, but on her role as a turning point in Gabrielle Chanel’s life, by evoking the smells of the Ballet Russes and of the makeup of that era.
Upon smelling this fragrance, you realize that it is true that this fragrance could have been created at any point in time–nearly 100 years ago, or in the present.
Misia is a quite sophisticated fragrance, bringing to mind a very elegant woman. It is powdery (from violet notes) and floral, and immediately reminds me of rose-fragranced lipstick and the scent of beauty products and makeup. Polge combined violet with Chanel’s signature Grasse rose and the Turkish rose and iris. This is not a fragrance for a younger girl–and I don’t mean this in a negative way–one imagines a chic older woman, who has years of confidence behind her and a lifetime’s worth of jewelry in her bedroom. It is at once vibrant and soft.
With the relaunch of the Rouge Coco lipsticks, a new shade has also been launched in honour of Misia.
Chanel Misia is available in Canada at select Holt Renfrew locations and Chanel boutiques.
