Last week, I was invited to the launch of Thierry Mugler’s newest fragrance collection, Les Exceptions. Mugler’s new fragrance boutique at Hudson’s Bay on Queen, is a gorgeous new space that is a showcase for these exclusive new perfumes.
Canada is the first country to experience the new collection, with the Bay being the only retailer for Les Exceptions.
There are five new fragrances in the collection: Chyprissime, Over The Musk, Fougère Furieuse, Supra Floral and Oriental Express. Each scent is unisex, though I definitely found some of them to lean more towards the feminine side, and some to the masculine.
The perfumers, Olivier Polge and Jean-Christophe Hérault, mentioned that each scent has a ‘surprise guest’, takes the fragrances from being predictable to unexpected and interesting.
Oriental Express is a powdery fragrance infused with vanilla, resin, sandalwood and carrot which creates a scent that envelops you. It’s luxurious, creamy, sensual and elegant–envision yourself with red lips and a fur coat. I saw this more as a feminine perfume.
Over The Musk is quite simply, musky. It’s what you would expect–fluffy, soft and warm like a cashmere blanket. While sophisticated, it is also velvety and sexy.
Fougère Furieuse was definitely one of the more unisex fragrances–I very nearly chose to take this one home with me. It’s oaky and woody, fresh (bergamot and moss), but the additions of more feminine notes like neroli blend the gender lines a bit and it makes for a sexy, very interesting fragrance.
Supra Floral is a very green fragrance; crips and fresh. A very feminine fragrance that revolves around the hyacinth flower but also has a bit of spice to it, thanks to amber.
Chyprissime is a traditional blend of bergamot orange, oak moss and patchouli–this mix actually was invented at the beginning of the 20th century. To make the fragrance more Mugler, shall we say, the surprise guest show us as a juicy, fresh pear. The fruity addition modernizes the classical scent.
After the presentation we were each given a bottle of our favourite fragrance to fill; I chose Oriental Express–it’s spiciness reminded me of one of my favourite fragrances, Coco Mademoiselle, for it’s sexiness. This, for me at least, is definitely a night time perfume, I would find it a bit heavy for daytime.
I especially love the designs of the bottles–very chic and art-deco–it looks great on my vanity.
Les Exceptions retail for $185 and the source refill is available for $127.
